Uber has announced the settlement of a longstanding lawsuit in Massachusetts with Attorney General Andrea Campbell, introducing new protections and benefits for drivers, including the nation’s first portable health insurance fund. This agreement aims to balance driver flexibility with enhanced benefits while maintaining their independent work status.

Beginning March 2025, drivers who average at least 15 hours per week with Uber or Lyft will receive a cash stipend for health insurance. Full stipends will be provided for those working 25 or more hours and partial stipends for those working between 15 and 25 hours. Starting August 15, Uber will guarantee Massachusetts drivers a minimum of $32.50 per hour for time spent on trips, with earnings adjusted over a two-week period to meet this threshold. According to a press release by Uber, this measure aims to keep trips affordable for riders.

Additionally, Uber will provide occupational accident insurance starting October 1, covering up to $1,000,000 for medical expenses and disability payments for drivers injured while working. Paid sick leave will be available from November 1, with drivers accruing one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours worked. This can be used to offset lost earnings due to illness or caregiving responsibilities. Furthermore, Uber will contribute to the state’s Paid Family Medical Leave insurance program starting October 1 by providing a quarter-end payment equal to half the enrollment cost.
