At Solo, we highlight the remarkable individuals who form our vibrant gig worker and content creator community. Our “Friends of Solo” series celebrates those who juggle gig work, personal goals, and creative passions while inspiring others.
This week features Pedro Santiago, a dedicated rideshare driver and content creator who balances his gig work, passion for YouTube, and personal goals.
Pedro’s journey began with a goal to save money for a trip. Initially driving part-time for Uber while working a traditional job, he soon saw the benefits of flexibility and control over his schedule. "I started driving part-time to help pay for a trip. It wasn’t long before I saw the benefits of this work—flexibility, control over my schedule, and the ability to earn while still having time for other pursuits," he recalls.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch a YouTube channel, Bet On You. Inspired by other content creators in the gig community, what started as a one-year experiment has turned into a thriving platform three years later. "I watched others before me teach and entertain on YouTube, and I thought it could be a fun project to try for one year. Now, three years later, we're still going strong!" says Pedro.
Pedro offers advice for newcomers: try as many apps as possible and stick with those that are enjoyable and pay fairly. His experiences in the gig economy have shaped this advice.
To maintain work-life balance amid rising gig work demands, Pedro sets boundaries by stopping work at specific times each day. "I give myself hard stops. When it hits 3pm or 5pm, I stop, go home, and put my phone away," he explains.
One memorable encounter during his rideshare journeys involved an elderly woman who was so grateful she asked if she could give him a hug. "I could tell that she probably doesn't see people that often. It made my day," he recalls.
As a seasoned gig worker using various tools to streamline his work, Pedro finds Solo particularly valuable for tracking earnings and taxes. The Tax Info and Automatic Mileage Tracking features simplify tax preparation for him.
Beyond his work life, Pedro used to act in plays and still harbors aspirations of acting in the future. He also recommends investing in a good cup holder for staying organized during long shifts.
To stay motivated during slow weeks in gig work, Pedro listens to pump-up music like DMX's tracks. "I listen to DMX when I need some motivation!" he shares.
Pedro’s journey emphasizes setting goals, staying flexible, and betting on oneself—principles resonating with both gig workers and content creators alike. "Just remember to bet on you, set goals, and take it one day at a time," he advises.
We’re proud to have Pedro as a "Friend of Solo" for his wisdom, creativity, and hard work in the gig economy.
