Uber Technologies, Inc. continues to prioritize accessibility across its platform, working to ensure that transportation is more inclusive for all individuals, including those with mobility challenges. As part of its ongoing efforts, Uber has implemented initiatives to improve the availability and safety of wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), supporting both riders and drivers in providing and accessing reliable transportation.
Most recently, Uber took a significant step toward enhancing WAV services in Washington, D.C., through an agreement reached with the Equal Rights Center (ERC).
In July 2024, the two organizations outlined a plan to increase the availability and response times for WAV rides in the District.
Over the next 18 months, Uber will roll out monetary incentives for drivers who provide WAV services in D.C., offer training on wheelchair securement, and ensure that WAV drivers complete this training before accepting WAV ride requests.
"Being able to reliably and safely travel from one place to another is something that many of us are able to take for granted, but we hear regularly from members that transportation options for wheelchair users in the District remain very limited," said Kate Scott, Executive Director of the ERC. "We are hopeful that the effort we’re announcing today with Uber will help better meet some of our community’s transportation needs."
Uber’s actions in D.C. reflect the company’s broader commitment to accessibility, as it works toward providing equitable transportation options for all riders, regardless of their physical abilities.
The Equal Rights Center (ERC) is a nonprofit civil rights organization that works to promote equal access to housing, employment, and public accommodations for all individuals. It focuses on eliminating discrimination based on race, disability, gender, and other protected characteristics through education, advocacy, and enforcement of civil rights laws.
Uber will offer monetary incentives for each completed trip made by drivers in the D.C. area using rented or personally owned wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) on the Uber platform.
A one-time incentive will be provided to D.C. drivers who complete their first WAV trip within Uber's market.
