Earlier this month, Airbnb.org, a nonprofit organization established by Airbnb, joined forces with 211 LA to offer free emergency housing to individuals displaced by the Los Angeles fires. The partnership quickly saw more than ten thousand applications for assistance within just 48 hours.
In response to the significant demand for housing support, Airbnb.org has pledged to provide emergency accommodations for at least 25,000 people affected by the fires. So far, over 17,000 residents in Los Angeles have benefited from more than 63,000 nights of complimentary stays on Airbnb. The company has waived all service fees for these stays.
Eshele Williams, an Altadena resident who lost her home in the Eaton fires and used Airbnb.org's services, shared her experience: “My family and I did not just lose our home in the Eaton fires. We lost our sense of stability, community, support and safety. We know there’s a long road to permanency ahead, but the housing support we’ve received from Airbnb.org, 211 LA, and other generous donors has allowed us to catch our breath so we can focus on rebuilding our lives.”
Kevin Cooley, another Altadena resident who also lost his home in the fires and booked a stay through Airbnb.org stated: “The uncertainty and upheaval following the Eaton Fire has been a trauma in itself, rivaling the horror and loss from the actual fire. In the search for a more permanent housing solution, the support from Airbnb.org is a godsend.”
Maribel Marin of 211 LA emphasized their swift response: “We stood up this program with Airbnb.org within hours after the fires broke out in Los Angeles... We’ll continue to partner with Airbnb.org to ensure our Los Angeles families have a safe place to stay.”
With many still requiring emergency shelter, Airbnb.org is dedicated to funding 100,000 free nights of accommodation. This includes extending stays for those who have lost their homes. In totality, both Airbnb and its nonprofit arm have committed over $26 million towards these efforts.
To date, Airbnb.org has facilitated over 1.6 million nights of emergency lodging for upwards of 250,000 individuals globally. In each instance of disaster response like this one in Los Angeles where they work closely with local nonprofits such as 211 LA – helping pinpoint those most in need – eligible recipients are provided credits that allow them access free bookings via their platform.
Airbnb takes measures against fraudulent activities by enforcing limitations such as seven-day expirations on issued credits which if unused get reallocated toward aiding others or prolonging existing
