The ongoing debate between organic and chemical fertilizers continues to be a significant topic for homeowners. A recent survey involving 220 homeowners sheds light on their preferences and the reasons behind them.

According to the survey, a majority of homeowners prefer organic fertilizers, with 136 votes in favor compared to 56 votes for chemical fertilizers. The primary reason cited for this preference is safety, particularly concerning pets and children. Organic fertilizers are perceived as safer because they are made from natural ingredients like compost and manure, which are less likely to contain harmful chemicals.

Chemical fertilizers, while more cost-effective and quicker in showing results, pose environmental risks due to potential runoff into water sources. They also require careful application to avoid damaging lawns through overuse. Despite these drawbacks, some homeowners still opt for chemical options due to their affordability and ease of application.

Organic fertilizers have their downsides too. They tend to be more expensive and take longer to show visible improvements in lawn health. However, they enhance soil health by improving structure and increasing organic matter content.

Some homeowners choose professional lawn care services despite the higher costs involved. These professionals can provide precise fertilization tailored to specific lawn needs based on factors such as seasonality and grass type. This approach ensures consistent care throughout the year, reducing the risk of over-fertilization.

Pet safety is a growing concern among homeowners when selecting fertilizers. Many prefer organic products due to fewer risks associated with exposure to pets. The Pet Poison Helpline warns that "small ingestions of fertilizer may only result in mild stomach upset; larger ingestions can result in severe poisoning from the iron, nitrogen and other chemicals."

Overall, while cost remains a significant factor for those who do not hire professional services, many prioritize safety when choosing between organic and chemical fertilizers.
