Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) and the Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne in Montréal have partnered to offer a free fiber optic splicing course. This collaboration aims to address the growing need for skilled labor in fiber optics, a critical component of modern data, TV, and phone networks.
The initiative seeks to create a pool of qualified talent for both local and national companies involved in fiber optic installation and repair. The skills acquired will support careers in high-demand fields in Canada. The course enhances the college's digital skills offerings, where it already leads with 15 technical programs for over 1,600 students.
Réjean Bourgault, national director at AWS Canada, stated, "AWS believes in the power of skills development and its positive, long-term impact on our customers, partners, employees, and communities." The free training is intended to open new career paths for participants.
The course will be conducted by experts from Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, a leader in fiber optic technologies, combining theoretical lessons with hands-on workshops. Upon completion, participants will network with employers to explore job opportunities.
Simon Delamarre, director of continuing education at the Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne, noted, "This training represents a concrete, accessible solution to meet a growing, highly specialized demand."
The two-day course will take place at the Collège's Agora numérique on May 5 and 6, 2025. Registration is open to all interested individuals, regardless of previous experience or education level.
Réjean Bourgault emphasized AWS's ongoing investment in Montréal, highlighting their commitment to empowering the local workforce for a stronger economy. "This initiative is part of our commitment [...] to empower the local workforce for a stronger economy," Bourgault concluded.
