Amazon Web Services (AWS) has joined forces with Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne to launch a free fiber optic fusion splicing certificate program in Montreal. Fiber optic cables form the backbone of modern communications, and the program aims to train individuals to meet the growing demand for skills in fiber optics installation and repair, crucial for industries like 5G and data centers.
AWS designed this initiative to nurture a skilled workforce for local and national companies involved in fiber optic projects. The training aligns with upcoming labor market trends, offering skills relevant to some of the most sought-after jobs in the near future.
Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne, known for its technical training in Quebec, adds this course to its digital skills programs aimed at over 1,600 students. This collaboration with AWS underscores the college's commitment to fostering innovation and enhancing student opportunities in digital fields.
"AWS believes in the power of skills development and its positive and long-term impact on our customers, partners, employees, and communities," explained Réjean Bourgault, AWS Canada Country Manager and Director. He emphasized that the partnership with the college will provide Montrealers and Quebecers with essential skills to improve their career prospects.
Participants will engage in both theoretical lessons and practical workshops led by experts from Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. The program will equip students with hands-on experience using contemporary fusion splicing technology, helping them connect with potential employers after completion.
Simon Delamarre, Director of Continuing Education and Business Services at Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne, highlighted the program's response to employer needs in Montreal. "This training represents a concrete and accessible solution to respond to a growing and highly specialized demand," he stated, noting that it aligns with the institution's social development goals.
Scheduled for May 5 and 6, 2025, the course will be available at no cost at the Agora numérique of the college. Open to those without prior experience, it primarily targets adults interested in transitioning to fiber optic installation and repair roles.
Réjean Bourgault concluded by affirming AWS’s commitment to the Montreal region, mentioning the company’s significant investments and its aim to strengthen the local economy by empowering the workforce.
