In 2024, Canadians set a new record for domestic travel on Airbnb, with nearly nine million domestic guest arrivals across the country. This marks an over 40 percent increase since 2019, indicating a trend where Canadians prefer to keep their tourism spending local and support Canadian hosts.
The data from Airbnb reveals that more than 70 percent of all guest arrivals in Canada were by Canadians booking stays within their own country. This shift in travel habits appears to be a lasting effect of the pandemic, as local exploration has become a way of life rather than just a trend.
In 2024, over 1,750 destinations across Canada hosted guests, setting another record. Notably, 28 new cities and towns welcomed Airbnb guests for the first time. Growth was particularly strong in Newfoundland and Labrador and Saskatchewan, where travelers are using Airbnb to explore these provinces' unique character and natural beauty.
Canadians are increasingly choosing to travel within their own province or territory, highlighting a trend toward staycations and affordable travel. Ontario and Quebec lead in the share of residents booking nearby stays.
Airbnb insights show that domestic searches continue to rise, reflecting Canadians' growing interest in exploring their own country from coast to coast. However, international travel remains popular among Canadians. While trips from Canada to the U.S. decreased towards the end of Q1 2025, nights booked by Canadian guests to Mexico surged nearly 30 percent year-over-year in March. Travel to Brazil and Japan is also increasing. Globally, nights booked by Canadian guests in March grew faster year-over-year than during Q4 2024.
