Grubhub has announced the recognition of 31 Chicago restaurants that opened during the 2020 pandemic lockdown and have reached their five-year milestone in 2025. Through its Established 2020 program, Grubhub aims to honor these businesses for their resilience amid challenging circumstances.
Afro Joe’s Coffee & Tea, run by Kendall and Aisha Griffin in Beverly, is among those recognized. They became a community hub soon after opening. Similarly, CheSa’s Bistro & Bar in Avondale, owned by Chesaree Rollins, introduced gluten-free Creole cuisine to the city when comfort food was greatly needed.
The initiative highlights restaurants from 25 neighborhoods across Chicago. These establishments reflect the city's cultural diversity and include many women-, minority-, and family-owned businesses offering a range of cuisines from Thai to modern American.
Lisa Belot, Director of Corporate Affairs at Grubhub, stated: “Our Established 2020 honorees capture what makes Chicago’s restaurant scene so special — hardworking, community-focused, and full of heart.” She added that this program serves as a token of appreciation for entrepreneurs who took risks during the pandemic.
As part of the recognition, Grubhub has provided over $80,000 in funding to support these restaurants' growth. The funds are intended for hiring staff, upgrading equipment, refreshing dining spaces, and expanding marketing efforts.
Honorees such as Dirty Tiff’s Cafe in Bronzeville and Thai Pastry Restaurant in Uptown have become important cultural fixtures within their communities. Grubhub plans to host a private celebration on June 3rd in Chicago to honor these businesses.
