Getting around should be accessible for everyone, regardless of age or tech-savviness. By 2030, nearly one in six people worldwide will be aged 60 or older, increasing the need for simple and reliable ways to stay mobile.
Uber has launched senior accounts, a simplified experience designed for older adults. This includes larger text and easy-to-follow directions to make booking rides easier. Senior accounts are part of Uber's Family profiles feature, allowing loved ones to assist with account setup and offer support when needed.
For those who prefer independence, Uber is introducing Simple mode, offering a streamlined experience without requiring a Family profile.
Setting up a senior account involves a few steps: a loved one invites an older adult to join their Family profile through the Uber app; the older adult receives a text with a link to download the app and create an account if they don't already have it. From there, they can request rides independently or seek help from family members.
Features of this new service include simplified interfaces with larger text and fewer buttons, saved places for frequent destinations like home or the doctor's office, flexible payment options including personal cards or Medicare Flex cards for eligible medical rides, real-time trip updates for loved ones, and support from family organizers who can book rides or contact drivers if needed.
Older adults not part of a Family profile can enable Simple mode in the app's Account section. This feature offers an easy-to-use interface with larger text and reduced complexity while allowing users full control over their accounts.
These features were developed in partnership with aging advocates, accessibility experts, and input from older adults to better meet their needs. "Transportation is one of the biggest barriers to independence as people age," said Silvia Candamil Neira, Vice President of Global Initiative on Ageing and Longevity. "Solutions like Uber’s senior accounts help break down that barrier by offering a simple and flexible way for older adults to get where they need to go—without always having to rely on others."
Both features are now available nationwide in the U.S., as well as in several other countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, France, South Africa, and India (Simple mode only). Uber continues its commitment to building inclusive products for every stage of life.
