Starting today, residents of Atlanta can now book a ride in a Waymo autonomous vehicle through the Uber app. This collaboration combines Waymo's advanced technology with Uber's established platform to offer electric and driverless rides.
Uber is working towards a future where autonomous vehicles and human drivers coexist to provide more affordable, sustainable, and reliable transportation. When requesting an UberX, Comfort, or Comfort Electric ride, users may be matched with a fully autonomous all-electric Jaguar I-PACE from Waymo at no extra cost. Riders will have the option to accept or switch to a non-autonomous vehicle before one is dispatched.
The familiar Uber app allows riders to unlock doors, open the trunk, and start their trip when the Waymo vehicle arrives. If assistance is needed during the ride, 24/7 customer support is available through both the Uber app and Waymo’s in-car screens.
Safety remains a priority for both companies. All autonomous vehicles on the Uber network must comply with safety guidelines. Data indicates that Waymo's vehicles are already contributing to reduced traffic injuries in areas where they operate.
Initially, these rides will cover 65 square miles of Atlanta, including Downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View. There are plans for further expansion. To increase their chances of being matched with a Waymo vehicle, Atlanta-based Uber users can adjust their Ride Preferences within the app settings.
In Austin, where this service is also available exclusively on Uber's platform, there are currently 100 Waymo vehicles operating. Customers there have rated their experiences highly with an average rating of 4.9 stars.
Uber expressed enthusiasm about continuing its partnership with Waymo as they introduce customers to increasingly electric and autonomous transportation options in Atlanta.
