Amazon has expanded its grocery delivery service, allowing Prime members in more than 1,000 cities and towns to order fresh groceries with Same-Day Delivery. The company plans to increase the reach of this service to over 2,300 locations across the United States by the end of 2025. This development introduces thousands of perishable items—such as produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods—into Amazon’s existing logistics network.
Customers can now combine their grocery needs with millions of other Amazon.com products in a single order for fast delivery. For Prime members, orders over $25 qualify for free Same-Day Delivery in most areas; otherwise, a $2.99 fee applies. Non-Prime customers can use the service for a $12.99 fee regardless of order size.
“We’re continuously innovating to make grocery shopping simpler, faster, and more affordable for our customers, especially Prime members,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores. “By introducing fresh groceries into our Same-Day Delivery service, we’re creating a quick and easy experience for customers. They can order milk alongside electronics; oranges, apples, and potatoes with a mystery novel; and frozen pizza at the same time as tools for their next home improvement project—and check out with one cart and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours.”
Amazon previously rolled out perishable grocery delivery in select regions such as Phoenix (AZ), Orlando (FL), and Kansas City (MO). Data from these early launches showed that many shoppers using the service were first-time Amazon grocery customers who went on to shop twice as often compared to those who did not purchase fresh food. Popular items included strawberries—which became one of the top five best sellers among all products sold—alongside bananas, Honeycrisp apples, limes, and avocados.
“After trying this service for occasional items, customers have discovered how much we’ve simplified online grocery shopping,” added Herrington. “For example, of course you can order cookware for Same-Day Delivery, but now you can add everything you need alongside it for grandma’s chicken soup recipe – all the fresh veggies, broth, noodles, herbs, chicken, and even bowls to serve it in. Just add what you need in one order, and we handle the rest. Customers are enjoying online grocery delivery so much we’re seeing them turn to Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market for even more of their grocery needs.”
To maintain quality standards for perishable deliveries such as dairy or seafood products arriving safely at proper temperatures at customers’ doors (https://aboutamazon.com/news/operations/amazons-same-day-delivery-expands-fresh-grocery-offering), Amazon uses temperature-controlled fulfillment centers and recyclable insulated bags similar to those used by Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market.
Amazon’s broader strategy aims to offer a wide selection of both national brands and local favorites—including organic options—at competitive prices through this new expansion. In 2024 alone (not counting sales from Whole Foods Market or Amazon Fresh), Americans spent over $100 billion on groceries and household essentials via Amazon.
The company continues its investment in multiple grocery options including online services like Amazon Fresh as well as physical locations such as Whole Foods Market stores nationwide.
According to industry sources (https://www.statista.com/topics/8467/amazon-fresh/#topicOverview), more than 150 million Americans shopped for groceries through Amazon last year.
