Dr. Romona Jackson Jones, Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, announced that Amazon Web Services' (AWS) expansion in Georgia will create high-tech jobs and foster innovation in the region. This statement was made in an official AWS press release.

"This is a historic day for Douglas County," said Jackson Jones. "We are pleased to welcome AWS to bring the most secure, resilient, and advanced cloud computing technology to the county, and with it hundreds of high-paying, high-tech jobs that will benefit our community and our citizens for the long term. This initial investment from AWS to expand its infrastructure here and support artificial intelligence technologies is a game-changer, and will result in our community being on the forefront of innovation, further establishing our state as a leader in technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence, which will empower businesses here and worldwide."

According to AWS, their data centers are designed to support demanding digital workloads, including GPU-intensive artificial intelligence and machine learning models. These facilities enable companies to operate with increased speed, scalability, and security, positioning regions like Douglas County as potential hubs for advanced cloud innovation and next-generation technology development.

Amazon has invested over $1.2 trillion in the United States since 2010, which includes infrastructure and employee compensation. The company has contributed more than $1 trillion to the national GDP and supported over 3 million jobs—1 million directly and 2 million more in construction, logistics, and professional services—thereby strengthening economic ecosystems across the country.

The company anticipates spending approximately $100 billion on capital expenditures in 2025 alone. This reflects Amazon's expanding role in digital infrastructure, logistics, and advanced technologies. Such investment aligns with Amazon’s long-term strategy to meet both national and global demand for cloud computing, AI infrastructure, fulfillment networks, and energy resilience.

Jones is not only the Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners but also the first African American woman elected to this role in county history. With a background as a U.S. Army veteran and public servant boasting 48 years of experience, she has overseen billions in private investment while leading strategic initiatives aimed at modernizing infrastructure, fostering economic resilience, and expanding high-tech workforce capacity.
