Amazon MGM Studios has announced that it will produce a sequel to the 1987 sci-fi comedy Spaceballs. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in 2027 and will see several original cast members returning, including Rick Moranis, Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and George Wyner.

Rick Moranis, known for his roles in Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, will reprise his character in what marks a rare return to acting. Mel Brooks will also return as President Skroob and Yogurt. The sequel will introduce new cast members such as Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.

The plot details remain confidential. According to the studio, information about the storyline is "under what the studio describes as 'lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield.'" The film is described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Josh Greenbaum will direct the sequel. The screenplay is written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Production will be led by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment along with Mel Brooks, Josh Gad, Josh Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter. Adam Merims joins Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez as executive producers.

Amazon MGM Studios continues to use its virtual soundstage technology powered by AWSPlus to support movie production. This platform provides filmmakers with tools that increase flexibility and help bring creative projects to completion.
