Amazon Pharmacy has announced the introduction of in-office kiosks at select One Medical locations in Los Angeles, starting December 2025. The new service is intended to allow patients to collect their prescriptions within minutes of their medical appointments, aiming to address the issue of unfilled prescriptions and improve medication adherence.
The kiosks will be located in various areas, including Downtown LA, West LA, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, and West Hollywood. Expansion to additional One Medical offices and other locations is planned for the future.
According to Amazon Pharmacy, nearly one-third of prescriptions in the United States are never filled, with access challenges being a significant factor. The company cites data indicating that one in four neighborhoods are classified as pharmacy deserts, which limits convenient access to medications. Even when patients reach a pharmacy, only half report that their prescriptions are filled quickly, according to J.D. Power.
Amazon Pharmacy Vice President of Operations Hannah McClellan said, "We know that when patients have to make a separate stop after seeing their doctor, many prescriptions never get filled. By bringing the pharmacy directly to the point of care, we're removing a critical barrier and helping patients start their treatment when it matters most—right away.”
Patients who choose to have their prescriptions sent to Amazon Pharmacy can select kiosk pickup when placing an order through the Amazon app. After ordering, medications are prepared for pickup within minutes at the kiosk, eliminating the need for a separate pharmacy visit. Patients can also consult with an Amazon Pharmacy licensed pharmacist via secure video or phone if needed.
Dr. Andrew Diamond, Chief Medical Officer at One Medical, commented on the impact of this new service: "As clinicians, we see firsthand how delays in starting medication can impact treatment outcomes. The ability to know a patient is leaving our office with their medication in hand—especially for conditions requiring immediate treatment like infections—can make a meaningful difference in their care journey."
Each kiosk is stocked based on the prescribing patterns of its specific location and leverages Amazon’s logistics and technology capabilities. The process involves creating an Amazon Pharmacy account, scheduling an appointment at a participating One Medical location, having the provider send the prescription to Amazon Pharmacy, selecting kiosk pickup during checkout in the app, and scanning a QR code at the kiosk to retrieve the medication.
McClellan added, "We've designed the kiosk experience to be simple, fast, and patient-centered. But we also understand that patients sometimes have questions about their medications. That's why every kiosk transaction includes access to our team of pharmacists who can provide consultation via video or phone, just as they would at a traditional pharmacy counter."
Amazon Health Services stated that this initiative is part of its broader goal to simplify healthcare and improve accessibility by meeting patients where they receive care.
