On September 17, 2024, Uber announced a series of new features and app improvements aimed at enhancing the safety, fairness, and ease of use for its more than 7 million monthly drivers and couriers worldwide. The announcement was made in Washington, DC.

Uber has introduced several measures to improve safety for drivers. One significant update is the nationwide launch of enhanced rider verification. Starting tomorrow, riders who have undergone additional verification steps will display a "Verified" badge on their trip request. This measure responds to driver feedback requesting more information about their passengers. The program has already been piloted in several US cities with positive results.

Another notable feature is the national rollout of "Record My Ride," which allows drivers to use their smartphone's front-facing camera to record video and audio during trips. This feature provides an extra layer of protection without requiring investment in a dashcam. Recordings are encrypted and stored on the driver's device, accessible only if the driver chooses to submit them for review.

Additional safety features include integration with Tesla displays for seamless trip navigation, hands-free prompts using Siri for iOS users, PIN verification to ensure correct rider pickups, and direct communication options with guest riders.

To promote fairness on the platform, Uber has implemented measures encouraging better behavior from riders, restaurants, and customers. Riders reported for inappropriate behavior will receive warnings and tips on improving their conduct. Additionally, drivers now have the option to block riders they rate poorly.

Uber is also introducing alerts that allow drivers and couriers to share information before potential deactivation decisions affect their account status. A new in-app feature will provide transparency regarding where rider fares go each week.

The app redesign aims to make daily operations easier for drivers and couriers. The updated interface includes a revamped home screen providing clearer guidance on optimal times to go online and easier access to key sections like Earnings and Inbox.

Couriers can look forward to redesigned navigation tools such as future traffic pattern predictions when calculating fares and ETAs, pick-up optimization guiding towards main roads or convenient corners, improved biking navigation directly within the app, and detailed delivery instructions including photos from customers.

Uber's commitment remains focused on being the best platform globally for flexible work by continuously innovating and enhancing its Driver app.
